Conservation Examination

Examining an artwork with different forms of illumination; using normal lighting sources, we look at the painting in reflected, raking and transmitted light.

In addition to these examinations Microscopic, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) photography is carried out by the studio. These examinations can help determine the painting technique, damages, and previous restorations if any.

A conservation examination report provides an evaluation of the condition of an object and serves as the baseline for the treatment proposal.

Microscopic analysis: for the study of the painting layer; texture of the canvas or paper support, brush-strokes of paint or watercolour, and any cracks and their accumulated contents, the extent of damages and for any other fine details.

Wood's Light (UV) to investigate surface coatings and any later additions by a previous restorer

IR-Reflectography to see through the paint layer and identify (if they are present) preparatory drawings as well as artists changes (pentimenti), damages and associated restorations.

All of the techniques described above do not alter the painting in any way; they are non-destructive.
